Back from camp. And ridin' again!

August 26th.
Well us girls are back from music camp! It was absolutly the best five days in August!!!! I'm working on a review of it that I'll post later. My instructor, Chris Jones from Minnisota, was so good! We became really good friends by the end of the week. But then, you'll read all about it in the review. The end result of camp? We want to go back for two weeks next year! LOL! :-) I think Naomi, Hannah, and I at least are planning on signing up for two weeks, and I think we have to do it pretty soon too. Kenosee Lake Kitchen Party is getting famous! :-)
Yesterday Ellie, I, Martha, and Cilla rode down to Rockford (about 5 miles away) to pick up the two mares that were there. I rode Sugar. She was trying to be a bit 'wolfy' to start out with out, trying to buck at the trot, and the canter. But she never tried really hard, and I was able to start almost before she got started. On the way home I got to close behind, Al, whom Cilla was riding, and he kick out, catching me in the left leg. :-'( It hurt pretty bad for a while, but thankfully now it only hurts if I touch it. I'll be more careful about watching Al after this. Sometimes it just takes a sharp reminder to keep your eyes open. Ouch! Sugar's a real sweetheart! She's pretty fun to ride. I'm planning on riding her again today.
August 28th
This morning Mom woke me up with, “Lydia! Hurry and go get a horse! There's a herd of cows in the hay!”
Well I tell you, I was out of bed and changed into coulottes in a hurry. On my way out I told Mom to call Brad, (our pastor and neighbour), and tell him that the cows came out of the pasture right beside the lake, he'll know whose cows they are. I knew which pasture they came out of, because of the palomino horse that runs with them. When I went outside I saw Jesse with Coyote, and dicided to ride Grey Girl, as Sugar probably wouldn't be much help, means how she's just a colt. So after cachting GG I threw a saddle on her, and after lenghening the stirrups from Martha's length, I and Jesse took off, him in the field and me on the road. I met Brad down at the corner of our land. He pulled up, “You sure got that horse saddled in a hurry!” he laughed. And then he said that he had got the cows back in their pasture. So Jesse and I headed back home with a 'that was fun'!

Jesse, Ellie, and Martha all want to go to music camp for two weeks next year too! It should be fun! I think I'll be taking guitar both weeks, and Jesse wants to take guitar one week, and manodlin one week, Martha wants to take, piano and guitar, and Ellie will probably be taking fiddle both weeks, Naomi and Hannah would both be taking one instrument for both weeks as well. I asked Jesse what week he wants to take mando on, and he said, “Which ever week Fred is teaching!”

One thing I forgot to tell you about is the new cow that we got. Her name is Sally. And she's about the prettiest thing on the place! Besides the horses that is! :-) She's kinda black and brown, with white. I'll have to take a picture of her. Martha is in charge of milking her, and she says that Sally's not doing too bad for it being the first time she has ever been milked. She's a first time heifer, but we didn't get her calf as it was 6 months old, and that's old enough to be weaned.
Ellie, I, Jesse, Martha, and Cilla went riding in the afternoon. I made sure and kept a sharp eye open looking for Al's heels. :-)
We rode up into the Provincial forest, it was fun! Sugar is doing better, I have been working on her being able to lead the horses, and be able to go a little ways with out the other horses. She listens to me when I talk to her so I find I end up talking her a lot. I love watching her ears flicking as she liestens. Sometimes when she is getting excited, like when she gets in deep mud, I'll start to talk to her, and put my hand on her neck and she turns her ears back and listens and starts to settle down.
August 29th
This morning we went and picked raspberries at Stehr's and Young's. We didn't get very many, I think the raspberry season is almost over. Here at home, Naomi and Hannah picked our raspberries, and Hannah was babysitting one of our neighbour's (Covlen's) girls so she watched over her too. After dinner I wrote letter to a friend, went and weeded my part of our garden, and then vacumed the main floor. After that we all went over to Covlen's and weeded for an hour there. Anything for money for music camp! :-D I was able to get in a little internet time there, (they have wireless, so we just bring the laptops), befriended a lot of people from music camp on facebook, and sent a letter/email off to a friend.
After supper Ellie, I, Jesse, Martha, and Zeke went riding in the provincial forest. We had a lot of fun! I love riding so much. I'm more used to riding 'colts' so riding Sugar is like old hat for me. Sometimes I prefer riding a young inexpierenced horse than I do riding an older horse, of course maybe that's because the only older horse I have to ride right now is Coyote, who happens to be very bullheaded and dull. The kids ride him because he's quiet, and well, he was bullheaded to start out with. So I only ride him when I have to. I should look for a 'investment turn around' horse, to raise some money for being able to go to music camp, I have enough money for it right now, but it'd be nice to be able to raise enough money that I wouldn't have to take any out of my account. Maybe I'll be able to get some more horses to ride/break for other people.
I didn't get in guitar practice today. :-( I'll have to make sure to practice tomorrow sometime. I've been prcaticing like Chris suggested, warm up some, then work on a new song, and then play several songs that I already know so as to not forget them. So far as I can remember (and I've been writing them down) I know 30 song/tunes by heart. I was able to add a new one yesterday, it's a tune out of Steve Kaufman's book, 20 Bluegrass Solos That Every Parking Lot Picker Should Know, and it's called Forked Deer. It's a neat tune. The next tune I'm going to learn is called Gold Rush. It's out of the same book.

August 30th
Dad decided that we wouldn't go to chruch today as from Martha on down have a pretty bad cold. I'm not so sure it's a cold, I think it's probably allergies the way it's acting. One day it's really bad, and the next day it's almost gone. We've been like this for months. I've had a touch of what feels like a cold for around a year and a half, sometimes it gets worse, and then it'll set into my ear. :-'( But it seem's like no matter how heathly we eat, no sugar, no prepared foods, etc. We're always sick. I don't really want to eat all the store bought food, I think homemade stuff tastes so much better anyways, but I wish we could figure out what we could do to kick this cold out of the house. Anyways. :-)
So I'm sitting here writing this and listening to the Whistlepigs and telling myself that I really should practice guitar if I ever want to get as good as Chris is. So I guess I'll practice. Todays' songs will be, Gold Rush, Nothin' To It, Ragtime Annie, Redhaired Boy, Turkey In The Straw, and Eigth Of January. Should be fun, I have one of my favourites this time! I love the tune, Nothin' To It, it's Doc Waston's version of 'I Don't Love Nobody', at least according to Steve Kaufman. :-) On the 27th I really gave my hand a workout! :-) Besides of Forked Deer, I had, Bill Cheatham, Billy In The Lowground, Blackberry Blossom, Under The Double Eagle, and Flop Eared Mule. I decided to try playing Blackberry Blossom without my first finger, I tell you! That's a workout for your little finger! I played it twice like that, and then the next song, Under The Double Eagle has always been a hard one for me, and after three times through it, my hand was starting to cramp up and I still had one more song to go. I like to play the songs at least three times through.
Okay, I'll go and practice now. :-) G'day for now.
August 31st
Five of us girls are going to weed Covlen's garden again. Hannah's driving, the rest of us are praying! LOL! She's not that bad of driver! :-)
Yesterday after dinner Hannah, Ellie, I, Martha, and Cilla went for a ride. It went really well. :-) It was my ninth ride on Sugar. She's doing really good for not being ridden for a year. She's basicly just green broke. So I still have to work on priciple things such as, backing, leading the herd, going off by herself, etc. She's coming along really well! I think that Millers will be pleased with her.
We're almost to Covlens and that's where the internet is so.....
Singingly yours,
Lyddy

Some pictures

One is of me and Sugar, and the other of me giving a riding lesson to Blaire.

It's almost camp time!

Friday the 7th
Yesterday Blaire and I reached our goal! She cantered Coyote with out me leading her! I was pretty proud of her! She has come a long way from the 29th, that's for sure. Eugene came that night and after staying over night, he and Blaire left after lunch today. He'll be bringing Blaire back for a little bit this next week, I guess though. Then 'My Girl' and I can go riding some more. :-) When we go riding with her on Coyote, I ride Grey Girl, one of Eugene's horses. She's a nice horse. I like her for 'out riding' for Blaire. That's when we are cantering, and Coyote doesn't want to slow down, I can come up and take hold on a rein or his headstall and help Blaire slow him down. That's actually rather fun! :-) It's interesting going from riding Coyote to riding Grey Girl, because Coyote has a very big stride and is really smooth, whereas Grey Girl has a short stride and is a little more choppy to ride. Both are nice, but going from one to the other is a change. :-)
It's been rainy all day today. :-`( It's good for the land but it means no riding. I should probably make the last two halters for Sharron that I need to make. But I don't feel like it right now.
I've been practicing guitar off and on all day. 10 days until we leave for camp!!!!!!! Can't hardly wait. Seems like I've been waiting a long time for it, yet at the same time it seems so short. :-) I'm just glad it's almost here now!
I guess that's all I'll write for right now. ~Lyddy~

Saturday the 15th
Oh me, oh my! I haven't written for a while! :-P I'll try to remember everything since the 7th. On Sunday the 9th I was able to talk to the Miller's about taking on their three year old QH filly, Sugar. And on Monday the 10th we rode down to get her. I rode Grey Girl, as Coyote doesn't handle strange horses well. They weren't home so after leaving a note I haltered Sugar, and we started home. Grey Girl did very well, she acted like she wanted to kick Sugar once when Sugar stepped on GG's heels, but a little bump on the reins and a “Quit that!” made her quit. That night I went out and rubbed Sugar for a bit. She was quite stuck up, until I started rubbing her and talking to her, then she relized that I actually could be a friend. The next morning I went out, haltered her and worked with her a bit. More or less just checking her out, and seeing where she was touchy, and what really needed to worked with. She's a bit pushy but at the same time, very sensitive. We rode down to Youngs that afternoon to drop off the halters that I had made for Sharron. Blaire rode with us, as Eugene had brought her up on the night of the 10th. So I rode Grey Girl and ponied Sugar. When we were at Young's, I felt it was the right time so I got on Sugar and rode her a bit.
On the 11th Eugene took Jesse back to Yorkton with him. He has a job that he wanted Jesse to help on.
On the 12th after having lunch, Hannah wanted to put the first ride on Shiloh her paint filly. Martha was riding Grey Girl as I was going to ride Sugar, so she ponied Shiloh for a bit in the field across the road from our place. Then when she came back, she asked Hannah if she could try getting on Shiloh. Hannah said she could so Mart got on and Hannah ended up riding Grey Girl. Martha was riding in my old western saddle with the stirrups my length, and Hannah was riding in Mart's saddle with Martha's length of stirrups! But we did go around six and a half miles! Neither Sugar or Shiloh tried to buck, and we went from a walk to a canter.
In the afternoon of the 13th Ellie, Mart, Cilla, Blaire, and I were going to go riding, but it looked like it was going to rain so we just grabbed some grooming tools and took the horses into the stable. Sure enough it started to rain just after we got inside. Then the wind picked up and it started hailing. Looking outside it looked like a blizzard! It was raining, hailing, and blowing HARD! I got soaked dispite of being in the stable, because the window is just a hole, and the wind was blowing in the wrong direction. LOL! Try to fit three nervous horses in a stall that was meant for two tied side by side! :-D Blaire and Mart had Coyote and Grey Girl in the stall, and Cracker was trying to get in. :-) We never did get to go riding that day. We went inside and chopped the rhubarb that had been picked that morning. Then I packed a little for camp and made another full size horse halter for Sharron Young.
That evening one of our neighbours gave their year and a half old collie dog, Bear, to us. He had followed us home on the 11th and when we took him back on the 12th he waited until we had gone about half a mile and then he came after us again and he's been here ever since. They didn't want him, and said that either we take him or he goes to the pound. I don't have any problem with dogs going to the pound, but Bear seems like a nice dog so why not try him out.
The 14th brought no rain thankfully. In the afternoon Ellie, Martha, Blaire, Cilla, and I went riding up in the provincial forest (or would that be the provincial bush? LOL!). I rode Sugar, she did really good. We explored some really neat trails!
Dad said that Bear was on trial period. He had to learn not to, nip the horses, and chase the sprinkler, and to learn to help us bring in the milk cow. He already learned to not nip the horses, and is learning when to nip the cow on the heels! LOL! Vanilla doesn't like him, and she tries to charge him every chance she gets. And when he nips her, oh boy, does she ever kick! LOL! Bear learns very quick though, we told him to get out of the garden once, and he doesn't go in it now! As Naomi says, I'm so used to the dogs just going where ever they want, and not listening to you. The Great Pryenees mostly so.
That evening we went over to the Stehr's place for supper. After supper we played tag for a while with Scott (their hired hand) and Mark (Mr. Stehr's son), then when we were all worn out we played 'duck, duck, goose' and 'have you ever'. Then it was getting dark so 'Sardines' was in order! That was fun! The only problem was that Ellie got chilled and now needs to see a chiropractor. :-( Ever since she got thrown off her Thoroughbred mare a couple of years ago, she has a problem that when ever she gets chilled she is in terrible pain the next day, and has to see a chiropractor.
Today it's been raining all day. No riding, period! Eugene is going to bring Jesse back tonight, I think. Us four oldest girls are getting ready for camp, and the younger kids are colouring pictures. :-) Actually I'm almost all the way packed for camp. My clothes are ironed and my backpack is packed. ;-) It's hard to believe that it's only 'day after tomorrow' that we go! LOL! I'm still in the '8 weeks until camp' mode! :-D It usually happens that way though. Time flies by so fast, and every year it goes by faster than the year before. Before I relize it I'll have used up all of my sick days and will be calling in dead.
That's all my thoughts for now. G'day until after camp!

Riding, Riding and More Riding!

July 27th
Oh my! I'm afraid I've gotten behind on my writing. :-( Let me see, what has go on since I wrote?....

We were able to go to Yorkton on the 23rd , I did some work out in the pasture on Coyote on the 25th and after we got home from church on Sunday, Martha and I went riding down to Rockford, and back. It's about 5 miles there from our place.
Church was pretty good on Sunday. It was at camp again, this is the last week of camp. Hannah and I didn't need to help the cooks this week as they only had around 20 kids, instead of the 60 some last week.
It's been raining off and on, and I'm trying to decide if I want to chance it and go and work Coyote in the field on softness. He's getting a lot better. He's starting to 'flex at the poll' (arch his neck, by 'giving' his nose to the rein pressure), at the walk, trot, and canter, and he's getting better in his backing and stopping. In his stopping he's starting to drop his head more and tuck his hindquarters under himself, as opposed to head up and stopping hard on his front end. I'm quite pleased with the results, he catches on quickly. I might consider offering to buy him from Dad. He's eight years old, which is the oldest I've had a horse, but I know if I treated him right he'd last a long time. But then that kinda puts a damper on my plans to get colts this fall, that is unless I find a way to make some money. Money, such a problem in life. :-) I don't know if Dad would want to sell him anyways. I'll have to think it over a lot more and then see what I come up with.
I think Eugene is planning on bringing Blaire (the indian girl he takes care of sometimes) up and having me giving her riding lessons. He was also going to bring up a couple horses for a couple of the other kids to work with. He was going to come either last evening or today, but he hasn't showed yet. We'll what happens. :-)

Well it looks pretty sunny out now. Maybe I should go and work with Coyote. I'll just bring my jacket, and hope it doesn't rain. :-) It prolly will.... ;-P I shouldn't be so pessimistic. :-)
So I guess that's be all for right now.
It's g'day for now. ~Lyddy~

Wednesday the 29th of July.
Behind again! Oops, I forgot to write yesterday. I spent most the morning making lunch. We had steak cooked in the electric skillet, rice, and salad. It was pretty good if I say so myself. :-) Today we're going to have hamburgers.
I, Martha, and Zeke went riding yesterday. We rode over to Covlens to see if she needed us girls to come and weed the flower beds. But when we got over there the flower beds were already weeded and Covlens were gone. So we turned around and came back home. We decided to go around on the 'moose trail', and guess what?! I saw a cow moose and twins right behind her. We decided to go the other way . :-) When we got home we went across the road into the hay field and rode back to the lakes. Then when we were coming back Jesse was cantering across the field towards us. So then we turned back around and went back out to the lakes, and had some fun around the field. When we came home for supper, we just tied the horses up, so we could go riding after supper. But right before supper, Eugene and Blaire showed up with the two mares. So we put the mares in the corrals and went in and had supper. After supper we went riding. Well Jesse, Mart, and Zeke, went riding. I guess I was riding too, just behind the saddle! Blaire was riding in the saddle! :-) I was steering Coyote, and we tried trotting some but that didn't work too well. Once Jesse, Mart, and Zeke started 'shooting' at us, and I said that we were playing cowboys and indians and Blaire asked, “Who's the indian?” I laughed and said, “You!”
“Oh!”
After that is was a joke among us, someone's bound to ask, “Who's the indian?!” It was pretty funny. :-)
Signing out for now. ~Lyddy~

Thursday the 6th of August
Talk about not writing and a busy week! I've been giving Blaire lessons every day, excepting Sunday,
since the 29'th of July. So it's get my chores done in the morning and then go riding in the afternoon. I'm very pleased with Blaire's progress on Coyote, she now can walk and trot without anybody helping her, (leading etc.), and I'm hoping that today she can go to a canter without help. As it is I just help a bit by leading Coyote off of 'Grey Girl' (one of the horses that Eugene brought over). Grey Girl is really Martha's project but I'm riding her while Blaire is riding Coyote. Dad wanted me to wait to get 'Sugar' until Blaire leaves as he doesn't think it'll be too wise for me to have two projects going at once, I don't see what would be wrong with it, but what ever. :-) Yesterday Ellie, Jesse, Martha, Zeke, Blaire, and I rode over to the Youngs place as I had to ask Sharron what she wanted me to do with a certain halter rope. As it is, I'll be making another miniature horse halter, and then one full sized halter for her. The other day I made a halter lead rope combo for myself. I figured if I'm going to be working with two horses I'll need two halters. It's just handy to not be stuck with one. :-)

I think Eugene is planning on picking Blaire up today. I don't know if she's going to be coming back for more lessons or not. I guess we'll see. This morning we'll be going to Preeceville, I'm going as I have to get a gift for a friend. :-) Should be fun! Other than I'm not exactly sure what to get her, ever tried birthday shopping for a friend across the continent?! ;-)

Well I don't think I have anything else to write, so g'day for now!
